2nd Term-Week 1: The Function of Cell Organelles
Welcome back! This week we are going to spend time learning the function of the organelles inside of the plant and animal cells. We will use the iPad as well as non-fiction text to investigate each part's structure and function. Students will be required to label the parts of the cells on a short quiz on Wednesday. On Friday, students will present the CELL RAP with their new group. Then we will be moving on to body systems!
Common Cell Organelles:
nucleus-controls cell functions mitochondria-Breaks down food and releases energy vacuole-Stores water and wastes cell membrane-controls materials entering and leaving the cell cytoplasm-jelly substance that holds the organelles in place endoplasmic recticulum-synthesizes enzymes for respiration ribosomes-makes protein lysosomes-contains enzymes that help digest things Plant Cell Organelles: cell wall-outermost layer of plant cell, protects the cell chloroplasts-produces food for the cell thru photosynthesis |

2nd Term-Week 2: Cells to Systems
This week we will venture into the Human Body as we learn all about the main organs and their role in keeping us alive. Students will be creating a non-fiction book complete with a Cover, Table of Contents, Literary Text Features, and an Index.
2nd Term-Week 3: Cells to System/JSU teachers
We had a very fun week last week with Red Ribbon week. This put us a little behind schedule. We are learning that we are made of trillions of tiny cells. Those cells have jobs. Cells with the same job work together forming a tissue. Tissues of the same function form organs. Organs such as the stomach and small intestine work together to break down our food. This is an example of a system. We are just beginning our Body Systems non-fiction book. This week, we will be writing the Cells to Systems page (1 &2). On Wednesday and Thursday our JSU Practicum students will be teaching students about their place on Earth by introducing the 4 spheres of Earth. Next week, we will dive back into the Human Body as we complete research to learn the organs and their functions.
2nd Term-Week 4: Circulatory System
We are exploring the first of several body systems-The Circulatory System. In this system, we will discover the major organs (Heart, Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries. Students will be able to describe the job of the system (transport blood, oxygen, nutrients, and wastes around the body). Students will use their knowledge to write Chapter 1 of the body system book. See the attached document for the grading rubric.

2nd Term-Week 5: Respiratory and Digestive
Students will discover how the respiratory and digestive system work with the circulatory system to bring oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body. Students will be writing pages 5-8 in their non-fiction book. We hope to finish up the book by Tuesday, December 1 and take a short quiz on the organs of functions of each system on Wednesday, December 9.
2nd Term-Week 6: Excretory, Skeletal, Muscular, and Nervous
Students will finish up their study of the body systems. A test will be given December 9. Students must match the name of the system with the organs and function. The books they have been writing will be due on the 9th as well. This is a large portion of their grade for this term. We have been working on this in class for the past 4 weeks. Please take the time to check with your child to see how their progress is going.
2nd Term-Week 7: Publishing
The great body systems book is to be completed by Wednesday. Students will be tested on content learned during the project:
Circulatory System-transports oxygen, nutrients, and wastes around the body through veins, arteries, and capillaries. [heart, arteries, capillaries, veins, blood]
Respiratory System-provides the blood with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide.
[nose, trachea, bronchi, lungs, bronchioles, alveoli, oxygen, carbon dioxide]
Digestive System-provides the blood with nutrients and essential minerals used to provide the body with energy. [mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine]
Excretory System-removes waste from the blood and other body systems.
[kidneys, bladder, waste]
*Students must be able to identify/name the major organs from a picture.

2nd Term-Week 8: Ecosystems Review
We are reviewing and adding to prior knowledge of the environment around us. Students are learning of the 4 spheres of earth and how each rely on the other for survival.
